Default Aqueduct crowned world 'wonder'

A 200 year old Aqueduct known as "Pontcysyllte" near Wrexham North Wales has been crowned one of the Worlds Wonders by United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (Unesco).

The aqueduct was built by Thomas Telford and William Jessop, is the longest and highest aqueduct in Britain.

Pontcysyllte is one of the region's biggest tourist attractions bringing in 250,000 visitors a year by boat.

The aqueduct, built between 1795 and 1805 at a cost of £45,000, is the UK's 28th World Heritage Site.

Rest of Story

Your thoughts on this and have you been on this Aqueduct?, I did some years ago, it was awesome.

It is a wonderful engineering achievement, especially given the date it was constructed. I wonder how many planning enquiries it would take today before it would be allowed to be built?

your right Mark truly wonderful engineering skills. Also you mention how many planning applications it would take today to get it built. Loads i think probably go on for years and years, also think about the cost then it was £45,000 what would that be today.

About the same number as it would take to get it demolished now

I was delighted to hear this news ... I think I went over it when I was very small, but can't really remember. We used to go to Llangollen quite often when I was a child and I still love the place. I'm always impressed when i see the aquaduct from the A5.

It's also been rather entertaining hearing BBC newsreaders trying to pronounce its name ... one of the (many) Welsh words that defeats me

Probably about the same if they were employing the illegals that stand around a certain warehouse store in Seven Sisters Road, London, N17, looking for cash-in-hand day work
