I think it was Dave that started this topic on FF, I had never heard of it before but have used it quite a bit since, its a great way to pass on things that I dont use any more, and I have also managed to get a few things through freecycle for myself. I do lots of crafts and I have managed to get some materials for my crafts through freecycle, its great.
I did get a laugh the other week when I put a jacket of my daughters on the site - it was a winter coat from le coq sportif and cost me about £60 when I bought it, my daughter only wore it about 6 times and decided that she didnt like the fur round the hood so refused to wear it again. I would normally put old clothes into the charity shop, but because I wasnt going into town I thought I would get rid of it this way. One woman emailed me about it, wanting to know if I would have it dry cleaned as she didnt like the idea of her daughter wearing someone elses clothes, another emailed me to ask if I would post it to her, but to send it recorded delivery so that she would have proof that I sent it, and another person emailed me to see if I would bring the jacket down to her house (which was about 30 minutes drive away from me) just to see if her daughter liked it! Needless to say I never gave the coat to any of them!
Anyone else use it?
:-o Audrey can you believe the cheek of it? I dont blame you for changing your mind about this. I haven experienced the freecycle myself but wouldnt expect it to be like you found it was.

Honestly freecycle is great - you should try it, I've used it loads and thats the first time I've come up against anything like that (maybe there was a full moon or something  ) I did have a laugh about it, once I got over the initial 'I dont believe it' rant! :-D
I've used the freecycle a few times, but really don't go back too much now. The one thing that ticked me off is there are those that abuse it by getting a bunch of stuff and the next weekend you can find them at the fleamarket selling the stuff people have given them out of the goodness of their hearts:furious:.
I can empathize Audrey I gave away a freezer a while back and when the people came to pick it up they came in pointed at the freezer asked"is that it" then picked it up and left not so much as an I,yes no or thank you. Makes you feel used.
Yes i use freecycle a lot and have had some great stuff, i have also given quite a lot as well. As with most things in today's world there are those few who with their remarks/comments make you feel like is it worth it but i just shrug off those kind of comments and not let it bother me.
Yes as poptop says you do get those who grab what they can then sell the stuff at the local car boot etc, our local freecycle ask's you to be honest and say its for car boot stalls some do and some do not but personally i do not have a problem with that at least its doing what freecycle is all about and that's keeping the stuff out of the landfills

Someone kindly gave me a brand new unwanted cat scratching post from Freecycle last night :)

I'm sorry but I will have to disagree with you on this, I don't think it abuse at all, at the end of the day, the person who obtain the free stuff, is free to do whatever he/she like with it, and if they want to sell it, good luck to them, who are we to say what they can't do or can't do, if people want to get rid of good stuff for nothing, you can hardly blame anyone for taking advantage if it worth a bob or two, I would do the same if I came across something that I think is worth something :) and it might be the goodness of the heart for some, but we are also doing them a big favour by getting rid of there unwanted stuff and freeing up unwanted space for them, I call that good service and free collection.

I went on the site a couple of years ago, I gave away a golf bag and clubs, and a small chest freezer that was just taking up garage space, but I never actually got anything from it, there seemed to be nothing of interest to me, so in the end I stopped using it. I must say the people who took my items were very gratefull, to the point of a follow up "thankyou" email. I feel I agree with Kenny on the point of what the recievers do with the items, if you thought you could sell it, why didn't you? "One man's junk is another's jewellery"
I used to use it a lot..about 1-2 years ago we had a lot of stuff to give away. Generally people were pretty good about coming and picking things up and they weren't too bad about organising for me to get things..but there are people out there who don't know what freecycle etiquette is...

I've signed up for it, but I havent went on there in a little while...
I've often looked but never found anything that I would like or indeed need...maybe I look at the wrong times?

I have found Freecycle to be great for getting rid of unwanted stuff but anything worth having gets snapped up very quickly so you have to be lucky to find anything you want.

I offered an item on here over the weekend. I got a reply and mailed the girl my mob number to arrange collection, she texted me for my address, the full address (obviously she has sat nav ) at the arranged time I told her I would be out but would leave the item in the front garden, covered and secure.
I asked her to let me know that she collected it.
Item had gone, but no contact from the girl, no thank you text, email or post on the freecycle site............I feel disillusioned with people at times. :(

I've got some great things from Freecycle and also offered and given away alot. Its also amusing to read some of the items up for grabs, eg,
"I've just used the last of my perfume and the bottle is too nice to throw away, would anyone like my empty bottle?"
I'm tempted to post this:
Hey, I didn't finish my dinner tonight, would anyone like my leftovers? Oh, but bring you own plate.

I've never heard of this before, but it sounds like a great way of finding things you need, say like for crafts and stuff, and a wonderful way to maybe help someone get something they really need, but can't get. Sounds really neat.
On our local freecycle about 4 weeks ago a chap left a message saying his mobile phone had broken and whilst it was being repaired did anyone have a spare mobile on the 3 network he could borrow. I contacted him saying i did and he was welcome to use it, his wife came and collected it. Every week i had an email from them updating me on how the repairs were going and the expected date of his phone being fixed. Anyway yesterday he emailed me to say his phone was now all okay and that his wife would return mine today, he was very grateful and said thanks etc in the email.
His wife has just brought my phone back and i was gob smacked, what lovely people they are just look at the pic below to see what they had bought me as a big thank you from them both. I told her i was not expecting anything but really appreciated their kindness.

I got the light gun for the PS1 from there last night, plus I gave away an old portable tv a couple of weeks.
Your story is good Dave, nice when it works out well like that.

Dave, that was a lovely thing for that couple to do, not many like them around anymore.
It is nice when you come across people like that, thanks Louise and Audrey. Well done on the light gun Louise :)
I bought a pair of wellingtons online but when they came they did not fit. I forgot to order a size bigger than my shoe size, it worked out cheaper for me to just order another pair (size bigger) rather than sending the others back.
So i put them on our local freecycle for free, wow i cannot believe the response within 15 minutes of my post going out i had 11 emails and 3 phone calls from people wanting them. Any way as i had put first come gets them a chap arrived 5 mins ago and has taken them.

There is a freecycle network in Sweden Annika, click here (http://www.freecycle.org/group/SE/Sweden) Unsure if there is one close to you but you can see the areas it covers on the main page.

I freecycled my old tv on there recently, and then I replied to someone offering a coffee table and I got it:) I like freecycle very much but the amount of "wanted" ads are incredible. And the things people ask for, ie flat screen tv (ooh preferably 42") and games consoles, its like: you want a what?
Here is a request posted on my local site today, the grammar is so bad its embarassing:

Very good Louise.
I agree though that the wanted ads are getting over the top now and there are so many. I did think about starting a rival group up to ours where wanted ads are not allowed. I will have to think about it some more.

I wonder if anyone actually gets the things they "want"? Dave I wonder if setting up a rival group might do more harm than good? Would it not undermine what is a very good site when properly run? How about becoming a moderator on there instead and weeding out repeated requests.
Claire, is a "simala" a wild animal?
That is exactly why i have not set one up as yet, the group here is excellent and they have a regular good group of moderators who do keep the site up together. They do not mind all the wanted ad's its only really live animals and spam that is not allowed.

On my local site yesterday someone offered a car.
It needed tax, mot and a battery as it had been standing idle for a while, but the owner said it was a good runner and in fair cosmetic condition,
I guess its easier to dispose of this way than to just scrap it.
I was tempted to ask for it lol, but we don't need the extra cost of a second car.
I placed an ad yesterday morning saying i had an older type heavy Philips 32" tv and an old 18 speed mountain bike in need of TLC to offer. 1 hour and 40 minutes later i had 32 emails wanting them. The bike was collected later that day and the TV is going at 10 this morning. The TV was one i had off freecycle a couple of years back so it was nice to be able to offer it back.
I have been reading this thread but forgotten to mention that I really like freecycle. I find that there is a real sense of community spirit there.
And as it goes how my pc got fixed back in May was all down to a freecycle post. I posted (from the library one weekend), ostensibly asking if anyone had an old pc knocking around and mentioning my sorry tale (how when I bought my pc second hand I wasn't given the windows activation key). Said I don't care about bulky old fashioned monitors as long as it worked. I got a really nice email from a bloke (younger than me) saying that he could help though he didn't have a pc to giveaway. He was an IT whizz (and at the time I saw his site from my phone), and believed that IT support should be affordable to everyone. We exchanged a couple of emails, a text and a phone call and at the end of May he came to my place and within 10 mins had me back up and running................
The downside was I had to pay for his time but it was cheaper than what the computer company wanted to charge me (for doing me a favour).
And he is now in my phone book as a contact for any other computer problems I may have.
I picked up a TV too on there once.........
So all hail to freecycle!
I completely forgot about Freecycle... I think I may wonder over to the site and have a nose...
I've been looking around and posting on Freecycle for a few days now and I can't help but smirk when I see a few of the 'wanted' posts - some people ask for a lot!! Asking for a piano... a treadmill... digital SLR camera... multi gym...
Then there's people offering a 'working mouse' (what does the job role entail?) and 'reuseable nappies' (hope they're new ones..)
