View Full Version : hippy herb garden
I remember writing in my journal here saying i was having a small herb garden, well i have planted it up now with some herbs. There is room for a couple more but at the moment i have 2 lavender, 1 parsley, 1 rosemary, 2 majoram (1 variegated) 1 sage, 1 winter savoury, 1 coriander, 1 thyme, 2 lemon balm and in the pots at the top i have chives, mint and bay.

Great pictures Dave :)
How much effort do you need to put in for your herb garden?
Do you use the herbs much?

That's neat Dave. Hope you get some good growing weather. :)
Not a lot of effort now at all Claire.
The frame was constructed by a mate out of timber that is like the old railway sleepers then after forking over the ground i bought top soil and filled it up with that and some compost from my compost bin.
All i do now is give it a very light hoe just before i water so that the water gets into the soil. I use the rosemary when cooking meats and also i have another one which you cannot see in the pics that i break off sprigs and then gently boil in water, i then let the water cool, strain it and then use that when i rinse my hair after shampooing.
Most of the others i use fresh in salads, i also want to try adding some to bread dough to see what that is like. But on the whole very little time needed to care for them. Oh yeah i forgot to say in the post above there is also parsley in there as well, i will edit the above post to show that.

Cheers, i hope so to :)
Going to have some salad stuff growing in pots as well this year.
That's nice, I would love to have a garden like that :)

Same here :)
My neighbour has 11 cats so any herb garden would be quickly destroyed!
There are a lot of cats around where i live as we are not allowed to keep dogs. The cats do not bother much with the herb garden, its probably the scent they do not like.

That looks really good, Dave. I hope your Lemon Balm is better behaved than mine was ... it escaped from its pot (I can't grow herbs at ground level cos they get 'watered' by the dog ) and colonised a big corner of the garden!!

What a great begining to a full and fabulous herb garden! I'd like to know what that tall black plastic container is in the second photo?
I also have taken to planting in pots this year due to degenerative problems in my back and knee. I have never planted veggies before so I'm anxious to see how they turn out.
Hippy, promise us more photos when your garden is in full bloom! :-d
Thats looks great Dave x
Thanks Natalie x

Yeah lemon balm can get out of control very easily Beth, i will try to keep it under control by dividing every now and again.

Thanks Heartlight, yeah i promise more photo's will come every now and again and the big plastic container is my rainwater barrel, its connected to the downpipe that comes from the guttering and so collects the rainwater, quite handy having it there for watering purposes.

I thought so! Does it have a spout or do you have to dip the water out?

There is a small plastic tap near the bottom for easy filling of the watering can :)
That's nice Dave. I like the boxes. I had a herb garden myself, but was flooded after heavy rains. What I like about it is that it's easy to grow and it smells wonderful especially on a warm summers night. Oh not to forget the health benefits. I have some mint and coriander. And talking about planting I want to grow strawberries out of a wine barrel. I have the "plans" here. Happy growing and eating Dave.

Thanks for that Brian :)
Yeah i agree the smells from a herb garden are wonderful, sat next to the lavender sipping a glass of Guinness, a lovely way to spend an evening. The strawberries in the wine barrel is a great idea Brian good luck with it mate:)
I had to go to the shops this afternoon and guess what i ended up going to a nursery as well :-d
I came back with some more herbs, but that is it now for the herb garden otherwise it will be crowded when they are all growing properly.
I bought Bronze Fennel, Ordinary Fennel, Oregano, Chervil and Basil :-d

Your herb garden looks great. I remember my husband making the gravy for the roast lamb we were having for the dinner and he told me he had picked rosemary out the garden for it. We dont have rosemary in the garden it was lavender he had used!! It still tasted good though,ha ha
I would love a wee herb garden though, does it take much looking after?
:-d i have never tried lavender in gravy, mind you why not :)
No its very easy to maintain, once the initial planting is done then its just a case of giving them some water in dry periods and harvesting what you need for cooking etc. I do not have much trouble from weeds as i had it built raised up a little as you can see, about a foot of soil was dug out and removed. This was replaced with clean top soil that i bought and as i compost as well i added that to it. So not many weeds and those that do begin because the soil is fine you can just ***** them out.
Is it too late in the year to start a herb garden?
No not at all Elaine.
As i say just keep an eye on the new plants during dry days and water them other than that you should be good to go. In fact it was my daughters birthday last month and i bought her 6 large tubs, a couple of troughs (like window boxes) and 3 small wooden barrels. I planted these up with rosemary, lavender, thymes, fennel majoram, chives to name a few and they are all doing well. In fact she has now begun using them in her cooking.
My Dad, as a hobby takes barrels cuts them in half and makes big planters out of them. He has no interest in the gardening side, just making the barrels look pretty. I could get one off him.
Thanks for the great idea Dave!!

Your welcome Elaine
