Sadly today i had to have my oldest dog put to sleep. She was 10.

For the past 4 days she hasnt eaten anything and just wasnt herself. So my mum and dad finally managed to get her into the vets this morning and he told them that she had an infection in her womb and that within 10 hours her womb would burst and would kill her. They could have operated but it would have cost £400 and she would have had only a 60% chance of surviving it. The vet reckoned that she probably wouldnt have come round because she was so weak, her temperature was sky high and age wasnt on her side.
Together as a family we decided to let her go so she wouldnt suffer anymore.

I am absolutely heartbroken. She was my baby. I feel so lost without her. I feel like such a bad person for letting them put her to sleep. We get her ashes back next week so she can be home with us.

I never got to kiss her goodbye because we didnt have long to make a decision but she acknowledged me before she went and i gave her a cuddle.

Something else that is bothering me is that the vet told my parents that she was going blind and could only now see shadows. I feel so sad that she suffered. I miss her. I cant stop crying.

Aw Kylie I'm sorry to hear about Sasha. Natural for you to be feeling doubt but trust me you did the right thing. You prevented Sasha from suffering and that's what any good owner would do. No doubt she lead a good life with you and your family and I'm glad you were there to give her a hug, I'm sure Sasha was too. Big hugs.

Sorry to hear about Sasha. It's a very difficult decision to make when choosing to put a pet to "Sleep" or not. Keep in mind though that you did the humane thing and ended her suffering. Even if the surgery was successful, what would her quality of life have been like? Don't feel guilty, she had a good life and you did what you could for her. It's better to end any suffering she may have had.

I'm sorry to hear you've lost a member of your family.

You did the right thing by letting her go, its the most unselfish act we can do for our much loved pets.

You've got your happy memories of her and she will know you all loved her so very much.

I am very sad for you ... as others have said, it's not an easy thing to have to do, but you should not feel bad. A wise person told me, when I was grieving after having to make the decision about my first 'solo' (as opposed to family) dog that it was 'the last act of love' for them ...

I'm so sorry for you; I've had yo have two elderly dogs PTS in my arms over the years, and it's never an easy decision to have to make.

For a dog, to go blind gradually in old age isn't such a big tragedy but as regards the other problem Sasha had, you definitely made the right decision there.
