View Full Version : South Africa vs England - Cricket
The time has come for South Africa and England to battle it out in the upcoming cricket series. Although South Africa is tipped to be favourites, I have my doubts anyway. We have in the past hammered England at Lords just to let England come back in the other tests.
Ex-South African Kevin Pietersen will logically be a major factor to ensure success for England. The South Africans will no doubt give him a hard time.
Really this South African born player is not liked here. Should be great.
I'm looking forward to it Bri :-D

Pietersen is a fantastic batsman in all forms of the game I remember his ODI performances in South Africa in 2004 were pretty impressive for a new comer to international cricket, and was Englands' leading run scorer in the 2005 Ashes series. He will obviously be a threat to South Africa but England have a pretty good bowling attack aswell, especially Monty Panesar.
That said South Africa have to start favourites, they have a great squad and some of the best batsmen in the world.
I myself would be screaming at Pietersen from my lounge, along with millions of other South Africans.:-p

Good start to the tour for South Africa, day 2 of the test against Somerset and the choice to bat first seems to have paid off with South Africa sitting on 515-3 dec.
Only down side is Kallis retired hurt after hitting an impressive 160.

And here we have the problem with 3 day tests:
South Africa 1st Innings
515 for 3 (100.0 overs)
South Africa 2nd Innings
215 for 6 (58.0 overs)
Somerset 1st Innings
249 all out (59.4 overs)
Somerset 2nd Innings
115 for 3 (34.0 overs)
At the close of play we have a draw - despite South Africa being nearly 400 runs ahead and looking like bowling Somerset by the end of a fourth day!
Better luck against Middlesex!

You may need it, Steven Jones is back on form for Worcester and Harmison and Hoggard are looking good. We could see a good pace attack in the first test, and Monty Panesar who is shaping to be one of the best spinners in the game.

Expect Makhaya "Hit the batman's head" Ntini and Dale Steyn to head our attack. Dale Steyn is blistering quick and swings it as well. Much is expected of him. I think he is no 2 in the the bowler rankings with over 100 wickets in 20 tests.

Steyn can get some great movement in the air - and the conditions will be favourable for a decent swing bowler, there'll also be plenty of green patches if a spinner can hit them the batsmen could be playing defensive a lot.
Nice position England...Kevin proved himself yet again...I have just seen the scorecard...Isn't it great that Claire loves Test cricket as well?:)

Claire couldn't tear herself away from it; I'm starting her on the LBW rule tomorrow :-D
Nice show by both KP and Bell, managed to secure the innings after Vaughan embarrassed himself yet again - managed to face a whole 3 balls ;)
Am looking forward to tomorrow; should be an interesting morning session if the rain holds off.

Come on Brian, the LBW rule is pretty straight forward:
The umpire will consider an lbw decision if he believes the ball would have hit the stumps had its path not been obstructed by the batsman's pads or body, and the ball was a legitimate delivery. However, if the ball lands outside the line of leg stump, the batsman cannot be given out - even if the ball would have gone on to hit the stumps.
Also an umpire will turn down any appeal if he believes the ball has struck the batsman's pad outside the line of the off stump, even if the ball would have gone on to hit the stumps (so long as the batsman makes a genuine attempt to play a stroke).
See, straight forward.

Are you watching the same game Brian? From what I witnessed today Michael Vaughan is going out of his way to draw this test.
Seriously why did he need to come out after tea and bat? For that matter, why did he feel the need that after hitting 480 in the first innings BEFORE tea on the second day England needed to waste another 3 hours at the crease when they should've been on the attack against the South African openers.
I don't follow it live, but I hope he is not looking back at recent history and thinking that England can't loose another Lord's test against South Africa. Reminds me of our own ex-captain Kepler Wessels who tried from the outset to rather draw the test than to loose it.

I just think that spending the entire of the first two days batting isn't the best use of the time available.
It was a fantastic batting performance from a number of the England guys; Pietersen did well, Bell was fantastic and Broad played the best innings I've ever seen from him - even Strauss and Cook managed to do the job they are employed to do and hang around at the crease for a few hours yesterday.
But with 3 days and needing to bowl South Africa out twice, it will all be wasted without a miracle from Panesar, Anderson and Sidebottom.
match ended in a draw - fantastic rearguard action by SA batsmen
next test match begins on Friday in Leeds!
We shall gladly take this result.:)

Congratulations to South Africa, they needed to bat out the last two days and they did it. A well deserved draw, and hopefully Michael Vaughan will think long and hard about his tactics on Friday.
Flintoff back in England squad - will he play? who will he replace if he does play?
jason_andrew_relva
15-07-2008, 18:11
I'm not sure Flintoff should play, I haven't been convinced of his performances of late or his form last time out for England.
However if he does play I think Collingwood is the weak link and Flintoff would replace him.
A more pressing problem for England is behind the stumps - I'm not sure Ambrose is the world class 'keeper we need to replace Alex Stewart.

17-07-2008, 11:25
Flintoff will start tomorrow but who he will replace is not certain. It looks like Vaughan will keep Collingwood in because neither Ambrose nor Flintoff will want to bat at 6 so it's likely to be Sidebottom or Anderson who gives way.
A bit late, but my congrats to England as well. We had this believe that the Lord's test belongs to us. Great game.

England finished the day on 203 all out - lasting an embarrassingly short 52 overs!
South Africa replied in the third session ending the day on 101-3; Kallis had another disappointing innings picking up just 4 runs (only 13 and 7 in the first test), his position as the worlds best all-rounder may be under threat.
Definitely a day for the bowlers :)

Would you care to explain the rules of cricket for the benefit of our American members? :-p

Would you care to explain the rules of cricket for the benefit of our American members? :-p
Well cricket is a very simple game really:
You have two sides, one out in the field and one in. Each man that's in the side that's in goes out, and when he's out he comes in and the next man goes in until he's out. When they are all out, the side that's out comes in and the side thats been in goes out and tries to get those coming in, out. Sometimes you get men still in and not out.
When a man goes out to go in, the men who are out try to get him out, and when he is out he goes in and the next man in goes out and goes in. There are two men called umpires who stay all out all the time and they decide when the men who are in are out. When both sides have been in and all the men have out, and both sides have been out twice after all the men have been in, including those who are not out, that is the end of the game!
Not sure who came up with this explanation but I like it :-D

So it's all over at Headingley and England have crashed to a 10 wicket defeat.
Again congratulations to South Africa; after playing a brilliant second innings at Lords to save a draw in the first Test, this weekend the South Africans gave England a lesson in cricket both with the bat (Prince and De Villiers were inspired) and with the ball (Steyn, Morkel, Ntini even Kallis outclassed the England boys with the exception of Panesar).
Roll on Edgbaston on July 30th where hopefully England can regain some pride!
I hope we pull this one through at Edgebaston. Last I heard we were down 5 wickets.:-(

Have no fear Brian, at just after 7 o'clock Smith smashed a boundary to bring up his 154, South Africa's 363 and a 2-0 lead in the series.
So the boys get tomorrow off, beaten by 10 wickets and then beaten in 4 days, what's the odds on the next match at the Oval leading to a 3-0 series defeat for battered England?
The Boys needed this win or would have not been allowed re-entry into South Africa. Over 40 years to get a series win in England.:(
Congrats to England for winning the last test match. Deciding to have an South African as a captain was a great decision. Pity it's Kevin Pietersen though.

1-0 England in ODI's; Harmison seems to have had a decent return to the international fold.
Elsewhere in the world India and Sri Lanka are poised at 1-1 in their 5 match series. Will be interesting to see who grabs the upper hand in Columbo tomorrow.
Will be interesting to see how these matches effect the World Rankings, after South Africa in second place, there's only 10 points separating New Zealand in 3rd and Sri Lanka in 7th. England, Pakistan and India could all find themselves dropping a few places.
